I met a girl one night at a party, somebody said her name but all I heard was Dunn or Lynn. I was doling out shots of a nasty blue liquor we dubbed windex to people. When she saddled up to the bar I looked at her and announced to the crowd assembled “Does anybody here remember Vera Dunn?” She looked at me stunned and said that’s my mother’s name how did you know? Matt, my good friend and best enemy, was somewhere in the room and he looked at her and yelped “Vera Dunn” in an accusing manner. She continued to stare at me and I shrugged and sang “Vera what has become of youuuu” to the tune of the pink floyd song. Others, drunkenly joined the chorus, which she found amusing for some reason.
Later another friend pulled me aside and “Dude, she’s a total bitch”. Why I asked? She cheated on Bob and I told’em to dump her stupid ass. I nodded solemnly in agreement but for a different reason and then went back to the bar for another chorus of “Vera what has become of you?” Only this time I gave it an inquisitive infliction and she stared back guiltily while I shook my head sadly.
I met her once more about five years after college at a barbecue and I startled her with the refrain “Vera, what has become of you?” She said how did you remember that? I nodded and said that was your mother’s name…and yer still wearing that ugly peacoat. She smiled and her then boyfriend, now fiancé ambled over and eyed her suspiciously.
In truth she never stared back guiltily but rather seemed to find me amusing and that’s why I remembered her because she seemed to like me, and back then that was more than enough. It is one of my most vivid memories of college, just a girl I met for ten minutes who laughed at my jokes.
